Some people comment on the cost of foals, and ask why a weanling should cost so much... We decided to put together some information about the cost of producing a purebred Arabian foal. This is from the breeders' point of reference, and does NOT include the STANDARD care of the mare for the year that she is gestating, nor the cost of a stud fee... The "barn" costs are figured on a 30 day stay in the barn - a couple weeks before foaling and a couple weeks after foaling before being shifted to an outdoor pen with shelter. Vet visit to ultrasound for pregnancy - $120 Rhino vaccines (4 of them) - $80 Shavings ($8/bag and 5 bags per week) - $160 Hay (minumum half a bale per day at $8/bale) - $120 Grain (quality, balanced broodmare feed & supplements) - $140 Registration of the foal - $100 Enemas, iodine dip, probiotics for foal - $30 Worming at 24 hours post-foaling for dam - $20 TOTAL = $770 This does NOT include any emergency vet visits or plasma supplementation, labor for cleaning stalls, initial outlay on materials like stalls, mats, panels for turn-out pens, cameras, internet service, propane to heat the barn, electricity, etc. It also does not include Sweepstakes Nomination of a foal (at $400) or anything else unexpected. This also does not include the time and effort in working with the babies and feeding them until they are ready to wean, vaccinations or hoof trimming, etc. Producing a foal is not an inexpensive venture, and so we are very selective about the foals that we produce. We sometimes will sell some of our foals at a loss to us financially in order to get them into good homes where they will be loved and well cared for. We take this into consideration for people that are wanting to breed their mares to our boys too, and offer a very generous LFG. :) Not everyone will have all the same expenses, and having a mare foal in the late spring can be considerably cheaper as they won't have to spend as much time in the stall, but feed and such will be fairly standard. We hope this helps some folks to understand the pricing on foals, and to appreciate the effort that we make to produce quality babies at reasonable prices!
